There is no appetite among the public for replacing Trident nuclear weapons. Opinion polls consistently show that a big majority do not think Trident should be replaced. This is no surprise when big cuts in public spending are on the agenda - who wants to spend billions of pounds on new nuclear weapons when your schools, hospitals, and local services are facing the chop?

The cheerleaders for replacing Trident are a rapidly shrinking fringe on the political right who are living in the past and who haven't realised that the days when Britian had an empire are long gone. It's all the more astonishing that all but one of the contenders for the Labour leadership support Trident replacement. Further proof that we are totally out of touch with the public on this, as with many other issues, and unless we change our tune rapidly we will be doomed to lose the next election as well.

Why exactly is Mr McTernan allowing this <a href="http://labour-uncut.co.uk/2010/07/16/its-time-to-stir-up-the-policy-debate-says-guest-editor-john-mcternan/" rel="nofollow">shameless pandering</a>?

It's actually sensible and well-argued. What's it doing on Uncut during his guest editorship?
