Importance: High

FAO Labour MPs

Please find below the agreed procedure for electing Labour members to the Select Committees, as agreed at last night’s PLP meeting. This is a pretty complex procedure, I’m very happy to answer any questions you may have.

The self-nomination process will begin at 3pm this afternoon, after which time you may come in and put your name down for one of the vacancies. You may change your mind. The deadline for self nominations will be 7pm next Monday, 21st June, after which we will proceed to the first of the two ballots.

All the best

Nominations process for elections to Labour vacancies to Select Committees

From 3pm on Tuesday 15 June, each Labour MP will have the chance to nominate themselves for ONE of the vacancies on the Select Committees. This can be sent in over the phone, in person, by letter, fax or email.

Lists will be displayed in the PLP Office and colleagues will be able to change their mind if they wish, up to the deadline.

The list will close at 7pm next Monday (21st June).

We then move to a two stage election process.

We will move to elect the vacancies on the 12 most subscribed Committees on Wednesday 23 June from 10am-5pm. Proxy votes will be allowed if arranged in advance.

For the other 12 Select Committees – the least subscribed Committees – an election will take place at a later date, Wednesday 30 June from 10am-5pm. However, if at the close of nominations at 3pm on Monday 21st June, any members is elected unopposed to a Select Committee that result will stand and they will be duly elected.

In the 12 elections on Wednesday 23 June, each member will have a vote for every Labour vacancy. If there are 5 Labour vacancies, you will have 5 votes.

At approximately 8pm on Wednesday 23 June we will announce the Labour membership of twelve Select Committees.

At this stage, all unsuccessful candidates for the first set of elections will have the opportunity to put their name forward to be a Member for any remaining vacancies on the 12 less subscribed Select Committees.

Lists for this second nominations process will open at 9am on Thursday 24th June, and will again be displayed in the PLP Office. As with the previous nominations process, colleagues will be able to change their mind if they wish, up to the deadline.

This second list will close at 7pm on Monday 28 June.

In the 12 elections on Wednesday 30 June, again each member will have a vote for every Labour vacancy.

At approximately 8pm on Wednesday 30 June we will announce the full Labour membership of all Select Committees.

Elections will be on a first past the post basis. Vacancies as they arise in the future will be filled through by election.
