Select committee vacancies caused by front bench appointments

We have been asked what happens to elected Labour members of select committees now that many of them have been appointed to the front bench.

The short answer is that there are fresh elections for the newly created places. On one select committee (BIS), the entire Labour cohort of new intakers (Luciana Berger, Jack Dromey, Chi Onwurah and Rachel Reeves) has been catapulted to shadow ministerial stardom. On most of the others, only a couple of places are at stake.

The full details are set out in the email below, to Labour MPs from PLP secretary, Martin O’Donovan.

Council of Europe, NATO and OSCE – expressions of interest
The PLP needs to elect its delegation to the Council of Europe. As set out at Monday’s PLP meeting we will agree the precise methodology for this at next week’s PLP meeting. In the meantime I would be grateful if colleagues could send expressions of interest to me on this email address.

The PLP also has a delegation to both NATO and the OSCE. Again, please send me expressions of interest, and we will agree the methodology for agreeing our delegation at Monday evening’s PLP.

For more information on the Council of Europe please visit http://assembly.coe.int/default.asp
For more information on the NATO parliamentary assembly please visit http://www.nato-pa.int/
For more information on the OSCE parliamentary assembly please visit http://www.oscepa.org/

Please send expressions of interest to me by 3pm on Monday (18th October).

Select Committees – expressions of interest
(further to the list circulated yesterday this now also includes vacancies on Human Rights, Public Accounts, Public Administration, Finance & Services and Environmental Audit)

Following the announcement of the new shadow ministerial team we have a number of vacancies on Select Committees. Many thanks to everyone who has already expressed an interest.

Please note, as emphasised at yesterday’s PLP meeting new members of the frontbench team should continue with their select committee duties until such time as their successor has been elected. Where a new member has been appointed to shadow a department for which they are also a Select Committee member they should speak to me or their Whip.

We will run any necessary ballots in tandem with the elections for the new Parliamentary Committee. Therefore the deadline for expressions of interest is Monday week (25th October) at 5pm.
