George Howarth’s deputy speaker letter

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to seek your support in the forthcoming ballot for Deputy Speaker.

I have served as an MP for 23 years – with periods as a Government Minister and on the Front Bench in opposition as well as time as a backbencher.  As a member of the Speaker’s Chairmen’s Panel, I am accustomed to chairing Westminster Hall debates and Committee proceedings. I believe that my extensive experience will enable me to fulfil the responsibilities of Deputy Speaker.

I strongly believe that it is the duty of the Deputy Speakers to support the Speaker in defending the rights of Members of Parliament and, if elected, I promise to take a firm but fair approach in the conduct of the business of the House.  I will use what influence is available to the office of Deputy Speaker to press for a sensible approach to the support available to MPs to enable them to carry out their work effectively.

I do hope you will feel able to support my candidacy.

Kind regards,

Rt Hon George Howarth MP
